Our History

The Canadian Federation of University Women Leaside-East York Club was founded in 1955. It continues to provide its members with guest speakers on a wide range of topics, a chance to pursue interests in small informal groups and opportunities to develop new friendships.

It is a local branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women, a national network of women university graduates, with its executive office in Ottawa and is affiliated with the International Federation of University Women. We are also part of Ontario Council. Their newsletter Dates and Data is available on their website.

Our Purpose

The purposes of the Club are to:

  • Stimulate intellectual activity among university women graduates;
  • Promote higher education among women;
  • Arouse and sustain an interest in public affairs;
  • Bring about understanding, friendship and co-operation among university women graduates; and
  • Support the aims and objectives of the Canadian Federation of University Women.

Meetings

General meetings are held at 7:30 pm on the third Thursday of the month from September to April, with the exception of December, at the Northlea United Church, 125 Brentcliffe Road. View a Map of our location at Northlea United Church. Invited speakers address these meetings on a variety of topics from the fields of politics, education, finance, health, the arts and the environment. An annual dinner meeting is held in May. Interest groups in which all members may participate are also offered.

Membership

Membership in this club is open to all women graduates of accredited universities. Membership fee is $95 per year and is due by November 1, 2007. Associate membership is also available for the same fee.

Scholarships

We have established a Scholarship Trust to raise funds to assist women students graduating from East York high schools to continue their studies at university. Each year we grant three scholarships to graduating students from East York Collegiate, Leaside High School and Mark Garneau Collegiate. In 2005 we also gave $3000 to the Transitional Year Program at the University of Toronto. Most of our funds come from donations from members, memorial donations and bequests. Tax receipts are issued for all donations of $10 or more. Donations should be made payable to CFUW Leaside-East York Scholarship Trust and mailed to 482 Broadway Avenue, Toronto, Ont. M4G 2R6.
